We don’t need no steen-king gender

There is no reality anymore. George Orwell’s Big Brother “newspeak” is with us now. New York City plans to let people alter the sex on their birth certificate if they so choose. They don’t even have to have a sex change anymore.

Under the rule being considered by the city’s Board of Health, which is likely to be adopted soon, people born in the city would be able to change the documented sex on their birth certificates by providing affidavits from a doctor and a mental health professional laying out why their patients should be considered members of the opposite sex, and asserting that their proposed change would be permanent.

Of course, the reasoning behind it is a straw man. Straw woman? Straw person?

Transgender advocates consider the New York proposal an overdue bulwark against discrimination that recognizes an emerging shift away from viewing gender as simply the sum of one’s physical parts.

Of course, no one seriously views gender as simply the sum of one’s parts, except perhaps those who insist on being called a woman after having their important bits cut off. For Catholics, your sex is ontological, it is who you are in your being, not just in your body parts. Which is why this proposal is so insidious.

Who is that values our sexual identity more? Those who would change it like yesterday’s underwear or those who believe it is an indelible part of who we are and reflects an aspect of our immortal being?
