The “unbiased” media

The mass media doesn’t like the term “partial-birth abortion.” In all the press coverage it’s referred to as “what critics call ‘partial-birth abortion,’” or some similar usage meant to distance “reasonable” people from the uncouth, un-educated hordes of pro-lifers.

How far will they go? James Taranto of OpinionJournal’s Best of the Web exposed CNN’s doctoring of a presidential statement to fit their own “journalistic standards.”

Here’s CNN’s version:

“I applaud the Senate for joining the House in passing the ban on ‘partial-birth abortion,’” Bush said in a written statement. “This is very important legislation that will end an abhorrent practice and continue to build a culture of life in America. I look forward to signing it into law.”

Here is the actual White House statement:

I applaud the Senate for joining the House in passing the ban on partial-birth abortion. This is very important legislation that will end an abhorrent practice and continue to build a culture of life in America. I look forward to signing it into law.

Notice the difference? CNN added “scare quotes” around the term “partial-birth abortion.” In this context, it is meant to convery dubiousness, sarcasm, or disagreement with term.

So rather than reporting the President’s words, CNN doctored them up. Does Jayson Blair have a new job writing copy at CNN’s web site?
