The Pope hasn’t condemned the war

I’ve said this several times and Phil Lawler, editor of Catholic World News, adds his analysis that the Pope has never outright condemned the war in Iraq as immoral. (subscription required, free trial subs available). He notes that European pacifists are unhappy that the Pope hasn’t done so.

As the Italian newspaper L’Espresso recently pointed out, a group of Catholic pacifists recently wrote an open letter to the Holy Father, pleading for “a simple and unequivocal” denunciation of the war. As L’Espresso also pointed out, those pacifists remain unsatisfied; they have never seen the clear papal statement that they want.

The fact is that if the war were immoral, it would behoove Christians to oppose it and to not participate in it and it would the Pope’s duty to inform them of that fact. He hasn’t done so.
