Scaring the children

A group from a sex-abuse victims’ group is putting up posters at Catholic schools in the Erie, Pennsylvania, area. The posters ask people to come forward if they know of abuse by priests. But they don’t have the permission of the local diocese. And the diocese says that the intent of the campaign is to put pressure on the diocese by scaring children and parents.

It’s a pretty low tactic. Whatever the complaint about how the diocese has handled abuse, it’s wrong to use children and parents as pawns in trying to force the diocese to change. It’s wrong when the bishops and clergy did it and it’s wrong when the other side does it now.
