No, that’s not actually a Santa hat, it’s a camauro, a white fur-trimmed red bonnet that hasn’t been seen since Pope John XXIII. But the way the photo’s cropped, it sure does look like a Santa hat.

I hate to say this b/c I am a huge fan of B16…but, he looks a little like the Grinch preparing to pounce on poor Whooville!
(15 Hail Mary’s for me!)
Fr. Philip Neri, OP
I think the Santa hat effect is enhanced by the camauro being about three sizes too big!
From other pictures I’ve seen, I think it’s meant to fit snugly.
Terrific. He seems to be going through the closets and bureaus of the Vatican and bringing out whatever looks interesting.
Dymphna –
Exactly, what she said.
So is that a red cape he’s got on, or what?
I think it’s the red capelet (I know that’s not the official term). At B16’s age he can’t afford to get sick so I hope he stays wrapped up from head to toe.
I know which garment you’re talking about, Dymphna, I just can’t remember the name, either.
Yo, B16, old-school stylin’!
I think what the Pope is wearing is called a “simar.”
For a better picture of B16 in his camauro, etc. follow this link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camauro. Oh, and 15 Hail Mary’s for me, too, Fr. Phil. Although, a little harmless fun at the expense of the Holy Father does make one feel just a little bit wicked, doesn’t it?
