Remember the cross

In a story in World Magazine about a young couple who adopted some kids from a troubled home, the wife and mother has a very good revelation that bears remembering:

“Real life had settled in, and I felt like God hadn’t paid me back in the ways I thought He would.” As she prayed, she said, she realized that God did not owe her anything for her sacrifices, but that He does promise to support her through them.

How true that is. How often do we pray and then act, thinking we’re doing God a favor by our actions and then get miffed at him when it doesn’t get go well or it feels like He hasn’t provided us with a grace that makes everything go smoothly or us feel great. There’s one cure for that hubris: Remember the cross.
