The Air Force Academy has forced the football coach to take down a banner that references Jesus. It sort of makes sense. The banner had the “competitor’s creed,” which included the line “I am a Christian first and last.” Now, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that this is unacceptable because you’re likely to have Muslim and Jewish cadets and they could not recite this pledge. Of course, if there were no non-Christians on the team, then that might be a different story. But as happens so often in separation of church and state stories, common sense has no place here.
That’s because the forces of political correctness have announced “religious tolerance” training because some nonreligious cadets complain they feel ostracized. Just great: the victim mentality has definitively entered our nation’s service academies. And what constitutes ostracization? Why, cadets using their campus email addresses to encourage others to see “The Passion of the Christ.” Horrors!
If this is unacceptable, then why is a chapel on campus not oppressive to non-religious cadets? Watch out. Before you know it, they’ll be challenging military chaplaincy.
The fact is that religious belief is a civic virtue as recognized by the Founding Fathers, the very ones who wrote the First Amendment. It civilizes and orders society and sets up a moral order. It’s especially important in our military leaders. God help us when we have a completely secularized, irreligious military.
Well everybody knows the founding fathers weren’t REALLY Christians…just Deists..so actually we are more in the spirit of things when we de-christianize things like chapels and football….and military education. We can all sleep better knowing religious tolerance has finally won out!
While researching Thanksgiving for a Thursday homily, I came across George Washington’s Thanksgiving Proclamation from 1789. It begins, “Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits…..”
