Peggy Noonan has been just about the best on the war on terror’s effects on us as a society. She dissects the way the constant threat of terrorism weighs on our everyday activities, especially if you live in an urban area, and most especially New York and Washington, DC. She also cuts through the inanities of the typical left-wing ideologies.
It is too bad Amnesty International is worried about possible U.S. insensitivity in apprehending potential terrorists. No doubt there has been and will be roughness. But mostly Amnesty is talking about this because they don’t really like us, they don’t know what time it is, they have to do something for a living, they think we’re more competent than we are, and they still don’t understand Sept. 11.
I think she comes closest when she ways that “they have to do something for a living.” The problem with professional activists is that they have to find a reason for being no matter how hard they have to look and how flimsy the pretext. Otherwise, you’d have to say that these people don’t quite remember 9/11. Then again, looking at how many Americans, especially the liberal elites, act today, I might conclude they’ve forgotten.
