Maybe some will stay open now

On Friday, Boston’s Archbishop O’Malley told the Boston Globe he may re-consider some parish closings. He said that he has new information on “a couple” of parishes and will make some quick decisions. Hoo boy, this could be trouble.

I don’t intend to suggest that if a mistake was made the archbishop shouldn’t rectify it, but depending on what he does this could open up a whole new can of worms. What if he decides St. Albert in Wymouth should re-open but not St. Anselm in Sudbury (to name the two “occupied” churches)? What if it’s a third church that hasn’t been suppressed yet? Will that give encouragement to the protesters to continue until they get what they want?

From a third-person perspective, the appointment of a new, outside committee to review the closing process and now this announcement of reconsideration of some closings, it looks like the archbishop is softening his position.
