Is this prudent? Cardinal Egan was in Albany the other day and said he supports Bishop Hubbard’s efforts to clear his name. Now it’s one thing to call for the truth to come out and to support the investigation. But it’s another thing to say this:
“In the meantime, I am going to assure you the good bishop of Albany is a man we support, for whom we pray and, especially, do we pray for the people of God in the diocese of Albany.”
It’s the usual exaggeration of “innocent until proven guilty” nonsense. Minkler regretfully thought O’Connor had the guts to do something and O’Connor just passed the buck. No such illusions that Egan would do anything with an evidence letter of abuses.
