Hans Blix more concerned about environment

Hans Blix has told MTV News that he’s more concerned about the environment than about war.

To me the question of the environment is more ominous than that of peace and war. We will have regional conflicts and use of force, but world conflicts I do not believe will happen any longer. But the environment, that is a creeping danger. I’m more worried about global warming than I am of any major military conflict.

In other words, he’s more worried about trees being cut down than about a nuke going off over a population center. This is the guy in charge of weapons inspections. Nice. At least he’s realistic, as shown in the following exchange.

Norris: Your contract was extended through June. Are you hopeful the inspectors will still be in Iraq in June?

Blix: No. I hope we have finished our work by that time.

    Norris: That’s optimistic.

Blix: We continue to work in an optimistic mood, but it may also be that the work finishes a week from now.

Yes, and it will be US troops that are finishing it, since your work was doomed from the beginning. As has been said many times, the inspection regime was only going to work if the regime was cooperating. If they weren’t cooperating, a different kind of enforcement was supposed to be necessary.
