With the massive changes coming to the Archdiocese of Boston in the next month, perhaps the one situation with the most potential for chaos is the wedding question. Is 60 parishes close, there are going to be a lot of couples all set to get married this summer and fall who are going to be scrambling to find a new parish near their home at which to hold the ceremony.
It looks like the archdiocese wants to organize something at the top-level. They’re asking all parishes to submit their schedules of upcoming weddings. Of course, it’s a lot more difficult to aggregate data from 357 parishes than it is from some-60 parishes, but then it appears they don’t want to wait until the actual announcements of closings are made.
In any case, it’s not like people are not planning for their weddings. My roommate Paul got engaged in earlier this month and has already scheduled his wedding for October. Sure, he knows it’s possible that the parish will close, but you can’t put your life on hold. You adapt and survive.
The interesting possibility is that this force some couples to pay more attention to the actual ceremony than the reception, which is where all the focus seems to have gone in recent years.
