The effort to provide a “third way” in the Massachusetts gay marriage debacle continues apace. Leaders in the House of Reps said they are drafting legislation that provides the rational basis for one man-one woman marriage as demanded by the state Supreme Judicial Court. Unfortunately, that effort may be undermined by an attempt to include “civil unions” in the bill, as a sop to gay activists.
What is the point of saving the word “marriage” with one hand if you’re going to give away everything that makes it legally distinct with the other hand? And they also say that they may submit the bill the court for an advisory opinion, which could scuttle it if they rule against it as I expect they would.
But then, it’s better than nothing. How our civilization has declined when that’s the best we can hope for.
