Edwards excuses anti-Catholic trash-bloggers

Two bloggers, Amanda Marcotte and Melissa McEwen, have a history of writing the most vile, blasphemous, and disgusting anti-Catholic trash, stuff so bad I won’t even link to it (suffice to say, it involves scatalogical and sexual references), and they were recent hired to be the Internet gurus for the John Edwards for President campaign. A storm over these two brewed up online and in print, especially after Bill Donohue of the Catholic League fired up his well-worn fax machine and fax-blasted every news organization in the country.

Yet, Edwards says he’s not going to fire them. He said that since the writing was on their personal blogs and not on behalf of his campaign, he was giving them a “fair shake.”

“I’ve talked to Amanda and Melissa; they have both assured me that it was never their intention to malign anyone’s faith, and I take them at their word,” Edwards said.

Of course! How could any Catholic be so thin-skinned as to think their faith was being maligned when someone suggests that the Virgin Mary was raped by the Holy Spirit and it’s too bad she couldn’t have taken an abortion drug?

Do I even have to draw the parallel? You all know it’s coming. Exactly this: If it had been Mohammed and Islam they’d written about, how long before their butts were on the curb? You know it and I know it.

John Edwards: Hypocrite and coddler of vile, disgusting anti-Catholic harridans. Makes a nice bumper sticker.

Update: How could I have missed this?

Marcotte also did not comment publicly until the campaign’s statement was released. McEwan defended herself Tuesday in a two-sentence posting on her blog, Shakespeare’s Sister, that noted her vote for 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry.

“I’m not going to say a lot about this right now, but suffice it to say that the fact I cast a vote, without hesitation, for a Catholic during the last presidential election might suggest I’m not anti-Catholic,” her post read. “My degree from Loyola University might also suggest the same.”

Oh yeah, can’t get more Catholic than that. Yup, she’s practically ready for canonization. Either she doesn’t even recognize the irony in that statement or she’s more cynical than I thought before.
