Catholics in Congress

(The second of four blog entries that originally appeared on Beliefnet when I was guest-blogging for Charlotte Hays.)

There are more Catholic Republicans in Congress than ever before, according to the Associated Press.

In fact, there are 67 Catholic Republicans, including six of the nine new Catholics in the House. There are 86 Catholic Democrats.

There has been an interesting shift in Catholic political belief in the past several decades as many Catholics have left their former home in the Democrat Party and crossed over to the GOP. Or to be more accurate, the Democrat Party has left behind practicing Catholics, as it sought to become more “progressive”, more concerned with social engineering and more at odds with Catholic teachings, while the Republican Party became a more hospitable home for Catholics who actually believe what their Church teaches. It will be interesting to see how this trend carries out to the future.
